If you look closely in this picture, the main compartment is the middle one.
The two side ones are quite thin, like those pocket compartments with zip found in your normal bag, hence not advisable to put belongings that are too thick.
Do note that the belongings in the above picture are arranged so as to allow the separate compartments to be visibly noticeable.
